Taste
Blanton's Black Label is a complex bourbon, meticulously crafted using Mash Bill #2, which features a distinctive sour mash blend of corn, malted barley, and a generous amount of rye. This bourbon is matured in charred American White Oak casks, allowing it to develop a rich character. The nose presents a delightful array of mellow earthy tones intertwined with herbaceous pine notes, while dominant hints of juniper, cherries, apples, and blueberries create a vibrant bouquet. Rich vanilla and honey weave through the profile, setting the stage for a palate that is equally captivating. Herbaceous notes of pine, accompanied by creamy butter, sweet honey, spicy pepper, and chocolate, deliver a harmonious experience. The finish is impressively long, leaving behind tantalizing undertones of white oak and toffee that linger enticingly on the palate.
History
Blanton's Black Label is best known as "liquid gold"! It was produced in 1984 under the guidance of Elmer T. Lee, Master distiller at the George T. Stagg Distillery, now known as the famous Buffalo Trace Distillery. There he worked with Colonel Albert Bacon Blanton, the President of the Distillery from 1921-1951. During the time he worked for him, he noticed that whenever there were ambassadors, dignitaries, and Colonel Blanton's family and friends, he would always choose a bottle aged at warehouse H at Buffalo Trace. This unique warehouse, built shortly after Prohibition, is the only metal-clad warehouse at the distillery. The metal structure creates significant temperature fluctuations, impacting the whisky's aging process. Blanton's whiskies are aged 6-8 years and feature a higher rye content, which contributes to their distinctive flavor profile. Quality is paramount for Blanton's, leading to a limited production that makes these bottles highly sought after and often difficult to obtain. In 1999, the introduction of eight different horse stoppers to the bottles added a collectible aspect to the brand, with each stopper showcasing a letter that spells āB-L-A-N-T-O-N'-Sā and depicting various positions of a horse race. This unique presentation is part of what fans cherish, though some letters are harder to find than others. Blanton's assures collectors that it produces the same number of each letter every year, maintaining consistency across releases. Additionally, Blanton's found overseas typically comes in a 700 ml bottle, while domestic versions are 750 ml.
