History
Michter's Sour Mash Whiskey is created with tradition in mind at the Michter's Distillery in Kentucky, Louisville. It was crafted in pursuit of Michterās goal of producing the finest American whiskey. In the 18th century, a Swiss Mennonite farmer named John Shenk settled near Pennsylvania's Blue Mountain Valley. After years of hard work, Shenk found himself with more grains than he could sell, prompting him to purchase a still and begin distilling whiskey. His establishment, which later became known as Michter's, holds the distinction of being the United States' first distilling company. Over the years, Michter's has refined its methods, experimenting with various barrel finishes. Their whiskey is a barrel strength bourbon, aged in a second custom barrel made from 24-month air-dried wood, which is toasted to enhance flavor. Michter's US*1 Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey is crafted from a mash primarily of plump rye grains, meticulously prepared to maximize flavor during fermentation. The whiskey undergoes distillation in a copper-pot still and matures in charred American oak barrels, resting in a temperature-controlled warehouse that promotes interaction between the whiskey and wood, imparting notes of marmalade and light caramel.
